Fixed Folding Van Ramps

These ramps are designed to make getting heavier items in and out of a van or specialised vehicle easier and safely. They reduce the need of any heavy lifting, therefore reducing injuries caused by manual handling when loading and unloading heavier items into a vehicle. These ramps are a permanent fixture added to the vehicle by using sturdy bolts and hinges. They are also designed to take up minimum space within the vehicle when stored away or not in use, by folding flat or upright.

What is a Fixed Folding Van Ramp usually used for?

These ramps are designed to be used for a variety of jobs, from most commonly being used to load and unload heavy goods, equipment, crates, tool boxes, furniture on wheels etc onto and off vans.

These ramps are also ideal for use within the medical industry, and for use for people who have loved ones with disabilities, as they are the perfect way of loading and unloading stretchers, wheelchairs, mobility scooters etc into specially adapted vehicles. Though they are called a Fixed Folding VAN Ramp, they can be made to fit any specially adapted vehicle that may require one, if the vehicle is big enough to accommodate one.

What weight can a typical Fixed Folding Van Ramp take?

A normal standard fixed folding van ramp is usually designed to withstand a maximum weight of 400kg-600kg. However there are heavy duty ramps designed for the task of taking the weight of loads heavier than 600kg for those more industrial jobs and heavier mobility scooters and wheelchairs. Key Features of a Fixed Folding Van Ramp

There are some ideal features that make this type of ramp the best and safest to use to load and unload heavier items into a vehicle;

Permanent Floor Mount

This is securely bolted to the inside of the vehicle near to the doors and keeps the top of the ramp safely and securely in place when the ramp is in use.

Gas Struts

These are designed to make lifting and lowering the ramp easy and light work for a single person to manage.

High Load Capacity

These ramps are built from strong metals (usually aluminium or steel) to support heavy loads of weights of up to 400kg-600kg.

Traction Surface

This is a feature in place to ensure that the ramp is even safe to use when wet, as it prevents slips by using either a perforated mesh or serrated metal planking for the surface that is walked on when unloading or loading the vehicle.

This depends on 3 key internal and rear door measurements –

  1. The vertical door to roof clearance, this is needed for the folded ramp to fit when stored inside the vehicle.
  2. The width of the rear doorway of the vehicle, this is to ensure that the vehicle is wide enough for the ramp.
  3. The floor to ground height to determine how long the ramp needs to be so as not to have too steep a slope when in use.

For a fixed folding van ramp to be suitable for purpose, you will need the following measurements of the vehicle;

  • The height of the items you wish to store inside the vehicle.
  • The width of the door(s) and floor of the vehicle, the door(s) MUST be wider than the ramp, and the floor needs to have a flat mounting area big enough for the bolt down swivel bracket of the ramp.
  • The load height and length –
    • For loads up to 450mm high require a 1,500mm long ramp
    • For loads up to 600mm high require a 2,000mm long ramp
    • For loads up to 750mm high require a 2,500mm long ramp
  • Vehicle class, Full sized commercial vans such as Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinter and Fiat Ducato are all models that can easily fit this system in. Smaller vehicles may struggle to have enough room for a fixed folding van ramp.

A typical 2 part folding ramp is usually 2.35m to 2.4m long and the width is usually approximately 800mm-1,100mm.

Typically a usual bi-fold or tri-fold ramp would require an internal storage height of approximately 1,160mm to 1,360mm and a doorway wider than 800mm-1,100mm. The rear floor height usually is compatible with the length of the ramp to ensure the gradient of the slope is safe, (usually 1:4 or 30% slope).

When you plan on using a fixed folding van ramp, it is important to remember to leave plenty of space to the rear of your vehicle when parking. This is to ensure that you can load and unload and use the ramp safely.
