Not all wheelchairs and mobility scooters are the same, some are heavier and bigger than others. Electric wheelchairs and bigger mobility scooters may require a heavy duty wheelchair ramp to safely load and unload them onto and off a vehicle. A heavy duty wheelchair ramp will typically be designed to support weight of 300kg to 450kg, which makes it safe for them to be used for heavy power wheelchairs, mobility scooters and bariatric users with a carer.
Most heavy duty wheelchair ramps are made from aircraft grade aluminium alloy to ensure that they are strong enough to take the weight of different sized wheelchairs and mobility scooters. The ramps also have slip resistant flooring to prevent slips when they are being used in wet weather conditions. These ramps also have raised edges of usually 30mm to 42mm high at the sides of the ramp to ensure that the wheelchair, mobility scooter and user do not slip off the edge of the ramp when loading into or exiting the vehicle.
As with any other ramp, to ensure that the slope isn’t too steep, it is important to ensure that you get a ramp that is a suitable length. For this you need to remember if the ramp is for residential or portable/assisted use. For residential use you will need a longer ramp for a less steep incline one the slope, whereas for assisted use, if a carer is helping to unload and load the wheelchair and its user onto and out of the vehicle, you might get away with a slightly steeper incline to the slope.

A standard heavy duty wheelchair ramp is usually approximately 75cm to 90cm wide and usually weighs 30kg to 50kg. The length of the ramp however is determined by the height of the vehicle floor from the ground.
